The Whittier Hills Collection is one of three main collections within the Whittier History Room. This collection was originally created with funding from the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) 1997-1998.

The purpose of the Whittier Hills archive/special collection is to collect and preserve the primary and secondary resources that relate to the conservation and preservation of the area known as the Puente-Chino Hills Wildlife Corridor. These resources have permanent and historical value for both the researcher and the general public. Although the major emphasis is on the local hills of Whittier, the value of the entire corridor is enormous, given its vital role in maintaining and preserving the wildlife and plant populations in the Whittier Hills.

The Whittier Public Library actively encourages the donation of materials that record and provide information on the Whittier-Puente-Chino Hills Wildlife Corridor. The Library also continues to develop the collection through purchased acquisitions, as relevant titles and other materials become available.

Subject areas included in the collection are: history of the area; environmental, ecological and geological studies and reports; written documentation by various groups who have worked to preserve and maintain the corridor; legislative histories, reports and documents generated by local cities, environmental groups and the State of California; and material related to the flora and fauna of the area.

Formats included in the collection are: maps, books, photographs, manuscripts, documents, newspaper articles, oral histories, scrapbooks, memorabilia, pamphlets and brochures.
